Cooler, Closer, or Cleaner? What are you?
Tim Grover, renowned for training elite athletes like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, introduced the "Cooler, Closer, Cleaner" concept in his book Relentless. These terms describe different levels of performance and mentality:
Coolers are good at their job but need direction.
Closers can handle pressure and get results, but not consistently.
Cleaners are the ultimate achievers, relentless in their pursuit of excellence, and deliver results repeatedly without needing external motivation.
Individuals must adopt a relentless mindset to apply these concepts for personal and career development. This involves setting high standards, continuously pushing boundaries, and maintaining focus and discipline. It's about being proactive, taking control of one's destiny, and not settling for mediocrity.
How to Develop a Relentless Mindset
Set Clear Goals: Define what success looks like for you. Break these down into actionable steps.
Commit to Continuous Improvement: Always seek to improve, learn new skills, and refine existing ones.
Embrace Challenges: View obstacles as opportunities to grow and push beyond your limits.
Maintain Discipline: Stay focused on your goals, even when motivation wanes.
Cultivate Resilience: Develop the mental toughness to bounce back from setbacks and keep moving forward.
The Role of Mentors
Mentors play a crucial role in this journey by providing guidance, support, and accountability. They offer valuable insights from their own experiences, helping mentees avoid common pitfalls and navigate challenges. Mentors can inspire relentless pursuit by setting an example, offering constructive feedback, and encouraging continuous improvement.
Applying the Concept to Craft a Happy Career
Identify Your Passion: Find what truly excites you and align your career goals with it.
Build a Strong Network: Surround yourself with people who challenge and inspire you.
Seek Out Mentors: Learn from those who have walked the path you aspire to follow.
Be Relentless: Never settle for less than what you’re capable of achieving. Always aim to be a Cleaner in your field.
By adopting the "Cooler, Closer, Cleaner" mindset and being relentless, you can craft a career that not only brings you success but also fulfillment and happiness. Mentors will be your allies in this journey, guiding you to unlock your full potential.

The Myth of the Startup in a Large Organization
Kevin Goldsmith's article, "The Myth of the Startup in a Large Organization," delves into the common misconception that large companies can operate with the agility and innovative spirit of startups simply by adopting a few startup-like practices. Goldsmith argues that while large organizations often aspire to mimic startups' flexibility and rapid innovation, the inherent structural and cultural differences between large corporations and startups make this extremely challenging.
Goldsmith highlights that many large companies struggle with bureaucratic hurdles, rigid hierarchies, and slower decision-making processes, which are antithetical to the startup ethos of quick iteration and minimal red tape. He underscores the importance of organizational structure and culture in fostering innovation, noting that superficial changes or isolated initiatives are insufficient for achieving a true startup mindset.
The article emphasizes the need for deep organizational changes, such as restructuring teams for greater autonomy, fostering a culture of experimentation, and aligning incentives with innovative outcomes. By sharing insights from his extensive experience across various tech giants, Goldsmith provides a nuanced understanding of what it truly takes to bring startup-level innovation to larger entities.
